Position Statements

The WVPMO considers euthanasia of animals:

  1. as a vital procedure integrated within the veterinary palliative care pathway.

  2. to be ethical and appropriate for animals with life-threatening, life-limiting or terminal disease when curative-intent or palliative options are not sought or no longer supporting an acceptable physical and emotional quality of life.

  3. to be an emotionally distressing time for many caregivers who struggle with the decision for euthanasia, and advocates for empathetic communication with caregivers during this time.

  4. should be humane and as peaceful as possible for the animal.

  5. should be conducted in accordance with the current euthanasia guidelines as set forth by the veterinary association or regulatory body of the country of the veterinarian.
